Paying Tribute to Alber Elbaz - The Former Creative Director of Lanvin Has Died at 59
Fashion designer Alber Elbaz passed away on Saturday April 24, 2021 - after three difficult weeks of fighting Covid-19 at the American Hospital in Paris. The Israeli-born designer had spent 14 years at the head of Maison Lanvin where he had the opportunity to relaunch the brand with his eclectic spirit, and had recently founded his own brand AZ Factory backed by Richemont.
“ I have not only lost a colleague, but a dear friend ,” said Johann Rupert, president and founder of Richemont. " We are devastated - Alber died from Covid after being in hospital for three weeks - it's so tragic. "
Elbaz was born in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1961 and moved to Israel at the age of 10. After university, his first contact with the fashion system was with the American designer Geoffrey Beene. Alber Elbaz was encouraged by his mother to move to New York City from 1989 to 1996 to pursue his career as a designer. In the late 90s, he was Creative Director at Yves Saint Laurent for a short time. We all remember Alber Elbaz as an ironic and witty designer who appreciated and loved women by always putting them first.
Then, Alber Elbas spent 14 years at the head of Maison Lanvin where he was able to relaunch the French brand. After an argument with the Taiwanese owner of the brand, Shaw-Lan Wang, he left the scene. In 2019, Diego Della Valle called him for the Tod's Happy Moments capsule collection by Alber Elbaz, and in 2020 the designer presented his latest AZ Factory project in collaboration with Swiss luxury company Richemont. Finally, in January 2021, he presented his first collection with a modern, sporty and dynamic look - wearable clothes that move with the body and free the woman from all constraints.
