What the crêpe indeed

A trip abroad to the Old Continent may be out of the question at present, but you can still have your fill of France (quite literally) right here on our sunny island, thanks to the Merci Marcel Group’s newest dining concept, French Fold. Located in Telok Ayer (although it wouldn’t look out of place in Le Marais), the recently-opened restaurant brings crêpes and galettes into the limelight, made according to time-honoured traditions but refreshed with innovative flavours and top-notch ingredients.

The Space

The folks at French Fold worked closely with Singapore-based studio Takenouchi Webb to transform a heritage shophouse into a verdant oasis, where lush greenery flourishes amidst an intimate space lined with Italian terracotta tiles and dotted with contemporary Scandinavian furniture, all drenched in natural light that streams in via an open glass ceiling. Thoughtfully designed, the cosy, welcoming space is suited to any and every occasion, from a leisurely brunch to romantic date to a casual business meeting.

The Food

Specialising in Breton-style galettes, which are typically prepared with farine de sarrasin, French Fold uses exclusively imported buckwheat flour (gluten-free!) in its dishes, along with a variety of premium ingredients sourced from France.

The menu serves up 11 galettes (made to order on a special griddle) spanning traditional and novel flavours, including No. 04, a quintessential combination of ham, sautéed mushrooms, comté cheese and a sunny-side up egg; No. 06, enfolding a piquant mixture of goat cheese, tomato chutney, roasted bell pepper and fresh basil; and the locally-inflected No. 11, packed with toothsome chunks of satay chicken, peanuts and ginger.

Satisfy your sweet tooth with the decadent selection of wheat-based dessert crêpes, ranging from the simple and classic blend of brown sugar and butter to the crowd-favourite topping of hazelnut spread (aka upgraded Nutella) to the delectable medley of Vahlrona dark chocolate, poached pear and homemade whipped cream.

And if you’re feeling especially indulgent, you can opt to add a scoop or two of gelato by local artisanal brand Birds of Paradise, with a choice of hojicha seasalt, strawberry basil or midnight gianduja.

Whatever mood you’re in, you’ll be spoilt for choice with French Fold’s extensive list of beverages, with tea and coffee appearing alongside libations such as 100 per cent organic and sustainably vinified wines imported from France, Fils de Pomme organic ciders, and cocktails created in collaboration with Proof & Company.
