Merci Beaucoup: Merci Marcel Opens New Flagship Store At Palais Renaissance
Following the success of outlets in Tiong Bahru and Club Street, Merci Marcel has opened another multi-concept store that promises to be the next hip retail destination, this time in Palais Renaissance along Orchard Road. Drawing on the quirky and artsy side of things, the new flagship establishment brings together top-notch food and a carefully curated selection of home accessories for a taste of la vie bohème.
The Space
1950s Singapore meets the French Riviera in an exquisite location that begs to be posted on Instagram. Vintage Danish dining seats, Swedish Møller chairs, Saarinen tulip furniture, and the like perch atop a wooden herringbone floor, exuding a cosy vibe as welcoming as someone’s living room. Adding a tropical vibe, exposed walls are painted over with palm leaf motifs, while custom-made rattan ceilings hang overhead. Framed by lush greenery and bathed in light from large arched windows, the store is a tranquil oasis in the bustling heart of Singapore.
The Goods
Merci Marcel prides itself on championing independent and sustainable brands, and the Orchard flagship certainly doesn’t disappoint. Carrying over 700 items from 80 international labels, the concept store shines a spotlight on environmentally-friendly, charitable, and artisanal products. For instance, Turkish brand Happy Nes donates a portion of all proceeds to the Tohum Autism Foundation, while CSAO supports initiatives in Senegal and West Africa with handmade cushions in traditional African prints, and sustainability-oriented All The Must uses upcycled materials for its surfer necklaces.
The Menu
Conceptualised by chef Nicolas Nguyen Van Hai, the French-inspired menu serves up classics with a twist. The traditional tarte flambée from Alsace is updated with reblochon cheese and smoked duck breast, while Merci Marcel’s signature Ravioles de Royan is made luxe with foie gras, and a dessert crêpe is paired with a tiramisu emulsion. Brunch options include organic eggs Benedict, peanut butter and banana energy pancakes, and viennoiserie made with premium French butter.
