Face Masks Are The New Twin Sets Of Fashion

Matching your mask to your outfit? It's a look.

Fashion has a way of taking functional daily essentials and spinning them into statement pieces. Think of the classic trench coat, which was originally invented to shield military officers from the elements. Or the still-trending bucket hat, meant to protect farmers and fishermen from rainy weather. Or bike shorts, once sported only by MAMILs and now seen everywhere from the runway to the streets.

So perhaps it's not surprising that the face masks we're all advised to wear have gone from practical to fashionable. Many labels have begun creating their own versions of protective coverings and infusing them with a distinct sense of personality, with several fashion houses also choosing to donate a portion of their products and/or proceeds to support charitable causes.

As a result, one of the biggest trends of this year so far is matching your mask to your outfit — the new twin sets of fashion. These coordinated sets started out unintentionally, as the first few prototypes were crafted using the upcycled deadstock fabrics left over from brands' collections.

But the trend has now gotten the seal of approval by everyone from Cindy Crawford to Chiara Ferragni to President Caputova of Slovakia.

If you're not feeling bold enough to go the tie-dye route as supermodel Crawford did, you can opt for understated alternatives, whether that's pairing a surgical mask with a blue top, or a white reusable mask with a monochrome look. For the more daring, there are face masks printed with strawberry and snakeskin prints from Silvia Tcherassi, Collina Strada, Reformation, and more.

After all, we'll all be wearing face masks for the forseeable future, so you might as well have fun with it.
