Continuing the tale of fashion's blossoming love for the East, New York label Coach marked its 15th anniversary with yet another milestone by bringing its Pre-Fall 2019 Men's and Women's runway show to China for the first time. Specifically, the brand headed to the West Bund Art Centre in Shanghai, which set the scene of the Coach Lights Up Shanghai show.
And light up Shanghai, Coach did, with an array of vibrant neon signs — a commonplace fixture in both Shanghai and the Big Apple, and a point of fascination for guests like Kiko Mizuhara, Liu Wen and BLACKPINK's Rosé.
As for the collection itself, Creative Director Stuart Vevers once again drew on his Americana-influenced vision: flowing floral dresses with exaggerated handkerchief hems drifted by, making way for mohair sweaters and cloud-like jackets in soft leather, suede or shearling. In that same '70s spirit, the house's signature Dreamer bag was also adorned with lavish patchwork.
What was really new were the prints of Coach's dinosaur mascot, Rexy, created in in collaboration with contemporary Chinese creatives: Zhu Jingyi's iteration was made with ink drawing, while the one by Guang Yu used hand-drawn graffiti print; music collective YETI OUT combined Rexy into their signature round face logo, and Sui Jianguo distorted a photograph of a T-Rex sculpture to create a new photo print for the collection.
