Claire Laffut speaks to us about sorority - one of the flagship titles of her latest record -, love, moments of life with her audience, and her next artistic challenges.

Today, <a href="https://www.lofficiel.be/art-culture/claire-laffut-nous-raconte-son-confinement" target="_blank">Claire Laffut</a> unveils &quot;Bleu&quot;, her first album with an evocative name. The one who &quot;landed like a blue&quot;&nbsp;in the music industry, from her Belgian countryside to Paris; she delivers herself with this first disc on her troubled loves and&nbsp;her desire to unite women.

As you are a singer and&nbsp;a painter, you created the cover of this first album yourself. What did you want to evoke with the art?&nbsp;

In fact, one of my paintings was plunged into a lake. The cover is part of one of my songs called &quot;Falling into a dream&quot;, where it&#39;s a starry sky, there is a constellation of faces. These are faces that I sometimes use in my painting, and symbols that I created. All these faces remind me of all the people I met on my way to make this album. It&#39;s like little stars that I have crossed.

Why &quot;Blue&quot;?

The name came to me at the end of the album, I had already taken the photo. We did not make the image thinking that the album would be called &quot;Bleu&quot;. This is the image that generated the title. It&#39;s a very simple term to sum up a lot of things. It&#39;s an album that will bring together everything I experienced during my twenties, when I started music, when I arrived in Paris, where I met people who brought me to the music, and where I experienced love stories. I felt like a grown-up and in fact I was still a &quot;blue&quot; compared to everything I was going to experience for the first time. Besides blue, it has a double meaning, because if you relate it to the sea, it can be a very serene and soothing colour, and at the same time very cold and melancholy.

Charlotte Abramow photographed the visuals for the album. What&#39;s it like to work with a woman like her?

With Charlotte, we know each other well. Since I was 15, I have been taking pictures with her. She always tries to stay as true to what I am, she is not going to try to transform me, to make up on me. She really wants to keep a natural look and that&#39;s why I like to shoot with her. I think that&#39;s also how we create timeless things. On the cover, I have no makeup, I have no clothes. It&#39;s me in my painting and that makes it unique. My painting and music take up more space than me in this album. In addition to that, we chose to shoot in nature. I&#39;m in a lake, it&#39;s a real lake, not a studio. It&#39;s capturing my universe in nature, without artifice.

For the clip of &quot;Hiroshima&quot;, the first track of this album, you surrounded yourself with the best: Charlotte Abramow, <a href="https://www.lofficiel.be/hommes/rencontre-avec-nicolas-coutsier-danseur-belge-qui-a-notamment-travaille-avec-beyonce" target="_blank">Nick Coutsier</a>, etc. What can we expect for the future?

The next clip that will be released is that of &quot;Sorority&quot;. We want to make a huge fresco with Belgian sports personalities, artists, maybe politicians, and display it in the street.&nbsp;

What do you think of when you write?

I try to talk to my little sister, but generally to all the young women, who could be my little sisters. I feel like this is something I take very seriously, the next generation. And then, I think especially of my heart, I try to do it good by writing.

&quot;Sorority&quot; begins with these words: &quot;We&#39;ve been sisters for years without bonding&quot;. Sorority, wouldn&#39;t that be a myth after all?

No, because she is being born. It&#39;s not a myth because there is evidence that there were matriarchal civilizations in the past, except that we were really controlled, and we were not given equal space to humans. I really think that it is being born and that it is necessary to be attached to it and to defend it. It is a state of mind that must be inked in the minds of young women, and even older ones. All women must be determined to change if they want to. For me it&#39;s vital, I suffered from it and I don&#39;t want others to suffer from it, so I try to make things happen at my level. Thanks to music, we can send messages.

We sometimes speak of the &quot;white fem&quot; who mobilize for white women, but who rarely show sorority with women of colour...

I think it will take time, but I still have the impression that there is a benevolence that leaves room for not just helping each other between communities. I was super proud of my little sister who is 18 and who took to the streets for Black Lives Matter. I think the new generation wants this change, and taking a stand is not just for their sisters in the community, it&#39;s for everyone. It takes time and you have to have the opportunity, but there are plenty of women who are moving for Afghan women and there are some who create associations to restore the history of art and restore order. in what women have done artistically since the dawn of time, which has been hidden or sloppy.

With this song, you advocate a feminist commitment. Is it characteristic of the artist to be engaged?

Not necessarily, an artist, if he wants, he can stick a banana on a wall (laughs). He can put a toilet in the middle of a room... Art, it is especially in the eyes of the one who looks at it, and music too. Afterwards, the commitment, as long as it does not come from the guts and the heart... I haven&#39;t really taken a position. I don&#39;t want to be a pest in this, I want to talk about things that are close to my heart. And that&#39;s why sisterhood for me is the very essence of feminism. Because feminism is equality between men and women, but above all from woman to woman, what do we do? How do we see ourselves? So it goes through that, talking, realizing that we are going through all similar things. Afterwards, an artist, he commits or not, I find it interesting when you can discuss things and when art can move certain things, it&#39;s just a different game. But one enters or one does not enter.

Who is a&nbsp;feminist personality we should&nbsp;follow?

I came across a lady&#39;s Insta, she doesn&#39;t claim to be a feminist, but she&#39;s a shaman, her name is <a href="https://www.instagram.com/gislaineduboc/" target="_blank">Gislaine Duboc</a>. I listen to her little messages every day, and she inspires me crazy. She talks about how adults look at children, for example during the holidays. The first intentions we put on a child and which will be decisive in its construction. She talks about success, what it is and what it creates. She links that to nature, and she also talks about freedom of expression, to get vaccinated or not&hellip; It&#39;s really interesting. It is very cheerful the way in which she brings the subjects.

The title &quot;MDMA&quot; corresponds to the lyrics &quot;Mais Dis Moi A quel jeu on jeux&quot;. Love, does it have the same effect as drugs on you?

No. Drugs are sensations, changes in perception. It is also how we will explore our limits. And love is something completely different. It is such a deep feeling, which is not just fleeting, that we do not consume like that. It&#39;s encounters and upheavals, and it still brings life.

Which song from this album took you the most work?

&quot;Vertigo&quot;. In melody, it is not obvious. And then in terms of production, I think I changed my direction 4 times. That is to say that with the voices, we remade all the production behind, change the chords etc. So I thought she wasn&#39;t going to see the light of day.

&nbsp;

The one you&#39;re most proud of?

There isn&#39;t one that stands out, but I think &quot;Vertige&quot; has potential. She has a message that shows my vulnerability and can talk to other women, and everyone. It&#39;s about love of oneself and it&#39;s something that touches me.

You took over the concerts little by little. How do you feel after a year and a half away from the public?

I realized that it was a concert, it&#39;s a real meeting and a sharing with a crowd or a small audience. It&#39;s a real present moment gift. We create a very strong moment, so I am invigorated. I missed it so much that I want to live it so thoroughly, I put my fears aside and I just want to make the present moment as beautiful as possible.

Your next challenge?

Make an exhibition of paintings. It&#39;s like an album. I am still in the design. There, I finished the songs and I will be able to really concentrate on the life and on the paintings and we will see if it leads to an exhibition, in any case, I really want to. But it takes time, I do paintings 3 or 4 meters in size and also, I am self-taught, so I learn everything on the job.
