The house&rsquo;s contemporary take on the 18th century decorative flair juxtaposes its signature tailoring and outerwear with extravagant flourishes &mdash; enter a trench coat with intricate ruffles at the shoulders resembling acanthus (used to create foliage design in the architecture of Greece and Rome) or a bird&rsquo;s ornamental plumes, and an organza skirt composed of hundreds of folded pieces to mirror a multilayered bloom. Make no mistake though, this collection is undeniably for the woman of the here and now, with well tailored outerwear, sharp jackets and flattering trousers providing a base on which volutes can blossom. The folded fabric coronas, gauze-like crowns and tiered organza petals are also contrasted on each look with the use of elastic belts, ultra-modern harness-like straps and bands, as well as mini bags and sexy strappy shoes in black. Ultimately, Max Mara&rsquo;s playful expression of Rococo and celebration of Madame de Pompadour draws a discovery of power, seduction and elegance from the softness and whimsy.
