Cartier has just announced that it has joined the CEO Carbon Neutral Challenge, a climate strategy that outlines a set of guiding principles to avoid, reduce, and eventually, offset negative climate emissions.

"As citizens of the world, we believe it is our duty to protect its biodiversity and make a positive impact on the planet," said Cyrille Vigneron, Cartier's President and CEO. "We firmly believe that aspirations for a sustainable industry can only be achieved through collaborative initiatives... We do hope that additional actors from the private sector will commit to join the challenge.”

The CEO Carbon Neutral Challenge was started by Gucci's President and CEO, Marco Bizzarri, in 2019. In an open letter, he wrote to CEOs across industries imploring them to come together to address their negative emissions "immediately, not over decades". Since then, the Challenge had drawn signatories like Sanpellegrino, The RealReal, and now, Cartier. Gucci themselves have been carbon neutral since 2018, having invested in protecting and replenishing critical forests and mangroves in the world.

In recent times, Cartier has invested more into its environmental sustainability efforts. In 2021, the Maison became a member of the Science Based Targets Initiative, an international collaboration that provides companies with a clearly defined pathway by specifying how much — and how quickly — they must reduce their negative emissions. That year, the Maison collaborated with Kering to launch the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030, inviting brands from the industry to commit to a set of objectives: Building climate resilience, preserving resources, and fostering inclusiveness.
