Saturday Night Fever
Like the women who ruled the ’70s, the spirit of the first Tommy X Zendaya collection is bold and unapologetic. Both on the runway and the soundtrack, the disco doyennes were very much present at the TommyNow Spring 2019 Fashion Show. In the clothes, that translated into dramatic pieces like high-waisted flares, satin tops and shimmering gold Lurex dresses to conquer the dancefloor in.
The collection also meant serious business. Zendaya’s tomboy sensibilities are reflected in the collection’s modern take on the tailored suit – all the rage amongst white-collar women in the ’70s – that is composed of denim waistcoats, wide-leg linen check pants and luxurious leather blazers, complete with shoulder pads. Annie Hall would approve.
Another bit of sartorial nostalgia that felt surprisingly timely: zodiac prints. Astrology fans both old and new will appreciate the elaborate zodiac illustration that adds a dose of colour and positivity to the collection. The psychedelic pattern appears on T-shirts, dresses, scarves, swimwear pieces and all over a tailored ensemble.
