Copenhagen Fashion Week: A New Breeze from Young Designers
Like the famous fairy tales of Danish writer Andersen, Copenhagen Fashion Week was full of contrasting colours: A combination of light and dark.
Recently, Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2023 became a destination to attract fashionistas with eye-catching performances of many designers from Europe to the US. What's interesting here is that the typical Nordic designs have become diversified in a new, less stereotyped perspective. Starting from the term “Ganni Girl” or “Copencore” mentioned all over the newspapers, we witnessed a big change in the new fashion market, emphasizing practicality and savings.
Below, we round up young designers with new, rebellious and enthusiastic energy who showcased their works at Copenhagen Fashion Week.
PLN
PLN's raw and bold Gothic designs have entered the bright and colourful CPWF schedule. This is a relatively young brand that Peter Lundvald Nielsen founded in 2020 in favour of the punk and skateboarding culture in the US. That's why most of the designs use thin and lightweight materials and are unisex. From the steps of ideation, and drafting to prototype development, Nielsen believes that what you create does not need to be perfect, but you need to really invest and show it to the fullest.
Marie Sloth Rousing
Sloth Rousing often focuses on experimenting with patterns and shaping. Therefore, the designs of Sloth Rousing often bring many unexpected elements. Previously, the brand has impressed with exaggerated forms from lightweight materials with a range of cheerful colours. For their comeback, the designer also brings exaggerated experiences of nightwear pieces often worn at home, quite comfortable, with a floating volume and warm neutral tones.
Buster's World
Although they were not on the schedule of Fashion Week, Buster's World is sure to be the name changer in the concept of fashion in Copenhagen. Originally from the University of the Arts London, Niels Gundtoft - founder of Buster's World, has created a new style through striking colours combined with designs that can be said to be quite rebellious and bold.
Buster's World looks back to childhood memories where Gundtoft skateboarded on a romantic street corner of Copenhagen. They exploit them through oversized pieces or eco-friendly materials such as recycled denim, and vests made from sleeping bags of a charity. This shows the sense of responsibility for the community of a brand that is small but carries a big message.
Latimmier
Spring/Summer 2023 in Copenhagen also marks a new beginning with Circulose's program to support young talents called CPFW NewTalent. One of those young talents is designer Ervin Latimer from Aalto University. Latimer's designs are often related to social issues such as racism or sexism. “Masculinity has always been part of fashion history.” This collection is called Juvenile Expectations, meaning that the next generation will understand and continue its legacy.
