The Legacy of ‘Star Wars’ Continues in the World of Anime
Just like the longevity of BBC One’s Sci-Fi series ‘Doctor Who’, Lucasfilm’s cult-favourite ‘Star Wars’ franchise is a story that’s here to stay and continue evolving for the foreseeable future due to its popularity. Disney+ has just debuted the trailer for the latest addition to the phenomenon: An anthology series heavily inspired by anime that tells nine original stories within the world of ‘Star Wars’.
After the success of Disney+’s award-winning live-action show ‘The Mandalorian’ — led by the ever so dashing Pedro Pascal, it doesn’t surprise us that the network is back with a whole new instalment to the series so fast. Science fiction is perhaps one of the most popular genres in big blockbuster films and television shows, leading shows to cult status with their army of fans, endless merchandise, convention takeovers, theme parks, and many more.
‘Star Wars: Visions’ is a unique reimagination of the world of ‘Star Wars’, telling original stories of new characters within the realm. “Lucasfilm is partnering with seven of the most talented anime studios in Japan to bring their signature style and unique vision of the 'Star Wars' galaxy to this inspired new series,” says James Waugh, executive producer and Lucasfilm Vice President, Franchise Content & Strategy.
“Their stories showcase the full spectrum of bold storytelling found across Japanese animation; each told with a freshness and voice that expands our understanding of what a 'Star Wars' story can be and celebrates a galaxy that has been such an inspiration to so many visionary storytellers.”
If you’re new to ‘Star Wars’, this could be just the show to introduce yourself to the empire. All you really need to do is familiarise yourself with the history between Jedis — peacekeepers of the Galaxy and the Siths — Darth Lords.
Streaming 22 September, the nine-episodic series will be available in Japanese and English on Disney+. Furthermore, actors dubbing the shorts in English include a list of Hollywood’s elites — Lucy Liu, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Neil Patrick Harris, Simu Liu, David Harbour, and Henry Golding to name a few. If that’s not enough to get you interested in it, we don’t know what will.
