A world class name in the luxury hospitality industry, W Hotels has set new roots in Macau with the grand opening of W Macau - Studio City, which opened its sleek tinted doors to guests in September this year. This marks W Hotels’ debut in the city of Macau, conveniently located at the Cotai Strip, literally minutes away (15 minutes to be exact) from the city’s international airport.

Known as the Las Vegas of Asia, Macau is one of the biggest tourist destinations not just for its larger than life casinos and countless attractions but also, for its rich and unique Portuguese-Chinese culture owing to the city being part of the Portuguese colony until as late as 1999. This distinct heritage can be seen in all aspects of the city, from its food, traditions and in particular its architecture. Amidst Macau’s distinct culture, visitors can enjoy a plethora of entertainment options from shopping and nightlife to world-class casinos where you can live your high roller fantasy. All of this is also offered at W Macau - Studio city where we got to experience the luxury and decadence the brand new establishment had to offer first hand. Here are some highlights from our stay there and why if you’re looking to fulfil that Great Gatsby fantasy, W Macau - Studio city is just the place to be.

The Spacious Sweet Suite Life

As soon as you step into the lobby of W Macau - Studio City, not only are you hit with their signature scent that permeates in every luxurious corner, but you will instantly be greeted by an intricately lit installation reminiscent of the waves of the sea — a callback to the city’s portside location. These careful considerations can be seen in all aspects of W Macau but especially so in its interior design that combines modern sensibilities with old Hollywood glamour. From the light fixtures in the main bar, Living Room resembling cages catching pearls to the gold panels in the rooms with ships embossed, each design element, no matter how small, has a distinct connection to Macau. Accent colours are also distinctly W Macau and give off a decadent vibe without being overbearing with its use of rich jewel tones — from emerald greens to deep sapphire blues.

These tiny touches can be felt even in the spacious rooms that W Macau - Studio City offers. There are four types of rooms to pick from and six suite types whether you’re in town for business or pleasure. Even the smallest room called the WONDERFUL Room boasts 37 to 49 square metres of space with plenty of room for a King sized bed and more. Meanwhile, suites like the MARVELOUS and WOW are pretty much homes away from home, complete with a living room area, walk-in closet and even an open terrace in some rooms.

Feast and Drink like it’s the Roaring 20s

That experience of modern luxury extends to the food and beverage options available at W Macau - Studio City with specialty bars and restaurants at your fingertips. For a breakfast feast or if you’re looking for a diverse selection to choose from, the Hawker Hawker will be your mainstay — think a souped up version of Asian hawker centres with its variety of cuisines, but done with that W finesse. That way you can get your comfort food at any time, whether it’s a simple cream cheese bagel or a hearty bowl of Yong Tau Foo. At night, the space transforms into a seafood market offering the freshest catches cooked up on the spot.

If you’re looking for a view to go with your meal, head over to DIVA instead. Located at the top floor, the specialty restaurant offers a more curated menu of contemporary Cantonese dishes as well as tea-infused cocktails that elevate each dish. Adding to the Great Gatsby fantasy is the art deco interior that shines particularly at night, where the sparkling Cotai Strip skyline makes for the perfect background for dinner dates.

The Blind Tiger
W Sound Suite

After dinner, you can head to the specialty bars such as the Blind Tiger, right next to DIVA for a deliciously boozy midnight cap with a view and lush music from their first W Sound Suite. The apothecary inspired bar offers a range of premium barrel-aged spirits from whiskeys to crystal clear sake as well as a robust menu of signature and seasonal cocktails by world-class mixologists. In particular, Blind Tiger’s mezcal creations are a huge highlight for us, which can also be enjoyed in private at the A.P.D micro bar tucked behind the Living Room bar. The latter is a cosy, hidden bar with a botanical theme that can be booked for private occasions, away from the hustle and bustle of the main bar. The botanical theme extends to the concoctions available at A.P.D where drinks are infused with herbs that are grown on location at their hydroponic wall.
