Cover Story: IVE Got a REI of Light

In the first half of 2025, IVE’s REI has gone full throttle — the K-pop group’s extended play IVE Empathy and single “Rebel Heart” both took pole position on the charts earlier this year, and the act just concluded its IVE THE 3RD FAN CONCERT  <IVE SCOUT> in South Korea and Japan. Perhaps our Sunday afternoon shoot in Seoul is the perfect little respite from the raucous call of the past months — REI smiles instantly when she turns on the water hose in the garden for our cover shot, but quickly switches back to display her game face for a whole series of snaps. “Thank you!” she chirps cheerfully when we tell her how pretty she looks in that summery yellow dress. REI charms us further as she speaks about her favourite moment in Singapore with IVE, and what DIVEs can look forward to next.

Hi REI! Earlier this year, IVE released the EP IVE Empathy, along with the singles “Rebel Heart” and “Attitude”. What can DIVEs look forward to in the second half of the year?

After wrapping up our latest comeback, we’re now preparing for our next Japanese album. We’re also working hard to take the stage at Lollapalooza once again, like last year. And who knows? Maybe DIVEs will get to see a whole new side of IVE soon…

Do you remember what your reaction was when IVE Empathy became IVE’s sixth number one album and “Rebel Heart” became your sixth number one single in Korea?

When I first heard “Rebel Heart”, it gave me the same kind of feeling I had when I first heard “I AM”. That’s why I wanted this comeback to feel even more special. When we hit number one, I was overjoyed because it felt like the song could really give courage — not just to me, but to so many others. I felt so grateful knowing that the message we wanted to share truly resonated.

You recently wrapped up IVE THE 3RD FAN CONCERT <IVE SCOUT> in Seoul and various cities in Japan. What was the month of April like for you?

Through the fan concert tour, I got to perform in my hometown, Nagoya. It was like a dream come true — something I’d hoped for since our debut. When the Japanese fans shouted “okaeri” (おかえり, a phrase that means “welcome home”), I don’t think I’ve ever been happier. It truly felt like I had returned home, and it was such a special moment where I could feel just how much love IVE is receiving in Japan.

If you had to choose from all that IVE has achieved so far, what are you proudest of?

Definitely performing at Tokyo Dome at the end of last year’s world tour. It’s a milestone that only truly recognised artists reach, and it had been a goal since our debut. When it was confirmed, the members and I hugged and celebrated together. We poured our hearts into that show — it’s a moment I’ll carry with me forever.

You’ve visited Singapore twice during IVE’s tours. What are your fondest memories of Singapore? Will your fans here get to see you again soon?

My favourite memory of Singapore is definitely the time when the members and I shared chilli crab together. We sat around a big round table, laughing and enjoying every bite of the local dishes. It was such a warm and fun experience with the members, and honestly, one of the most unforgettable moments of my life. I really hope we can meet our Singapore DIVEs again on the next tour!

What does a perfect getaway look like for you?

I love capturing memories through photography. For me, the perfect vacation is one where I can take in the beauty of a place with my own eyes and also record those moments through my camera lens.

Aside from your strong rap skills and stage presence, you’re known for your unique style. What are some of your current fashion and beauty must-haves?

Scarves! I think scarves are my must-have item all year round. When I’m dressed casually, adding a scarf gives the look a special touch. You can also style it in so many ways, and it totally transforms the vibe. It’s an irreplaceable item for me. As for beauty, blush is essential! The colour you use can completely change your mood and look. Deciding which blush to wear has become the most exciting part of my day.

Is there anything you’d like to accomplish or try before 2025 ends?

During a recent break, I filmed a quick cover of “Luther” at home and shared it online. I was so touched by how many people enjoyed it — it made me really proud. So my goal this year is to create one more video — another side of REI, through my own style of music and visuals.

What can fans of REI look forward to next?

I’m always thinking a lot about change. I believe constantly showing new sides of yourself is a natural part of being an idol. I’m always exploring what other versions of “REI” might look like, and what truly suits me. While I’ll always stay the same at heart, the colours within REI will continue to grow and evolve — so please look forward to what’s next.
