Known for being a pioneer in menswear and a master collaborator in the industry (more recently for Fendi x Skims), the designer finally got his much-deserved recognition at the Fashion Awards 2021, bringing home the Designer of the Year award at the end of the night.

Deemed the most important award of the night, it honours “a British or international designer whose innovative collections have made a notable impact on the industry, defining the shape of global fashion.” The award was presented to Jones by actress Demi Moore and Olympian diver Tom Daley.

Designers and creative directors like Balenciaga’s Demna Gvasalia, Gucci’s Alessandro Michele, Tommy Hilfiger, Nensi Dojaka, and Simone Rocha also won big at the awards in other categories.

Only a few days after his shocking passing, the industry honoured the late designer Virgil Abloh and his legacy with a special in memoriam segment in a space surrounded by his beloved friends, collaborators, and fans. During the proceedings, actor Idris Elba did a beautiful reading of Maya Angelou’s poem “When Great Trees Fall”, followed by heartfelt testimonies from Kim Jones, Tommy Hilfiger, Tan France, and more. The designer was also among the 15 creatives who won the Leaders of Change award for their positive change within the fashion industry in the categories – Environment, People and Creativity.

An event is not made spectacular without the help of entertainment’s greatest icons. The Fashion Awards saw performances by pop icons Kylie Minogue and Charli XCX, as well as up and coming artists like Lil Buck.

The ‘Can’t Get You Out of my Head’ star and fashion icon also took to Instagram to round up her night, “Thanks for having me, British Fashion Council. A celebratory, glamorous, heartfelt and poignant occasion. Many thanks to my entire creative and production team for bringing this vision to the stage. Love you all!!!”
