Ardent fans of the house of Dior will know this much – amongst Christian Dior's varied interests was his deep belief in all things superstitious. In Dior by Dior – his autobiography published in 1956 – the French designer recounts his brush with a fortune teller at the age of 14. The encounter would come to influence the historic Maison profoundly. In Dior's arsenal of good fortune? The number eight which would go on to inspire the Bar Jacket, the sweet-scented lily of the valley and a chanced-upon five-point gold star.
Decades on, Monsieur Dior's mystical motifs have lived on through the house's creative directors. For Dior's Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2021 show, Maria Grazia Chiuri is said to be paying homage to the symbolism of tarot, a theme which was last explored in the Maison's Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2017/2018 collection.
Tune in at 9:30pm tonight to catch the show live, below:
In the meantime, here's a sneak peak at the legendary Visconti-Sforza tarot cards (also the deck that is said to have inspired Chiuri for this collection) in action at Dior's couture ateliers:
