Cannes kicked off Wednesday night with the opening ceremony hosted by actress Monica Bellucci. The president jury of the main competition this year is Pedro Almodóvar, the Spanish director of Volver, All About My Mother and Broken Embraces, to name a few.
Ismael's Ghosts is 2017's opening film. It stars Mathieu Almaric, Marion Cotillard and Charlotte Gainsbourg — superb actors — but the film, directed by Arnauld Desplechin, didn't do that well.
Worth noting: 2017 is set to be Nicole Kidman's year, even though the star wasn't present for opening day. The actress has four projects (all of them screened at the festival), including the highly anticipated Sofia Coppola-directed film, The Beguiled, which is competing for the Palme d'or. We also can't wait to see How to Talk To Girls at Parties, an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's book of the same title, where she plays punk alien Queen Boadicea. Watch. Out.
The fashion? Everything is rather subdued this year. We're seeing a lot of champagne hues with sparkly touches, as seen on actresses Lily-Rose Depp and Sandrine Kiberlain, as well as model Daria Strokous. Mini-dresses also make their presence known, thanks to all the women sporting Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello.
Standouts looks: Bella Hadid wore another leg-slit dress, again by Alexandre Vauthier; Elle Fanning had a unicorn painted on her Vivienne Westwood Gown and Chinese actress/singer Chris Lee wore a daring Maison Margiela number, atypical for Cannes.
