The theme of Chanel’s Fall 2017 show was outer space, and, true to form, attendees were greeted by a giant rocket (with blast-off capability! Batteries not included) positioned right in the middle of the Grand Palais.
Looking far beyond earth, Lagerfeld scattered shimmering embroidery like space dust, with models’ galaxy-like, glitter toe-capped boots receiving lots of love on social media. Straight and squared silhouettes emphasised the space uniform focus of the show, as did several looks featuring built-up, almost protective collars. Jewelled bands across evening dresses obliquely referenced Saturn’s rings, while on the less subtle side of things, eclipse and astronaut prints covered the collection’s knits and airy dresses. While the first commercial flight into space may be a long wait away, Chanel’s extra-terrestrial fantasy will more than suffice for now.
