The festivities, which were held at Hotel 50 Bowery, celebrating Asian-American culture and its convergence with fashion were just as stylish as one would expect from a brand that self-describes as “an act of exploration.” The event not only displayed an impeccable quality of dress, but also an enviable assortment of Asian delicacies, including traditional Singaporean New Year’s dishes from Rasa in Greenwich village, including Prosperity Salad and Cereal Prawns. The party also boasted such local Singaporean and Malaysian favorites as mee goreng, nasi lemak, and soft shell chili crab from Laut in Union Square, as well as kuih talam (pandan tray cake with coconut milk) and pulut inti (sweet sticky rice with kaya jam) from Chinatown’s Kopitiam for dessert. To name a few more (as if there wasn’t enough food to choose from), OC and the Asian American grocer H Mart created a mini-market pop-up of Korean sweet and savory snacks, there was a bubble tea station (from NYC staple Kung Fu Tea), Lunar New Year themed cocktails by Hennessey and Svedka, and beers from the well-renowned Chinese brewery, Tsingtao.
Now that we’ve divulged every detail about the evening’s large scope of delicious Asian foods, we can begin to touch on the noteworthy quests, music, and entertainment that brought together different aspects of Asian culture in order to create the perfect NYFW evening. To name a few Asian cultural figures that were in attendance, there was BUBBLE_T, a Queer Asian and Pacific Islander dance-party collective, GUSH, a lesbian QTPOC intersectional and interdisciplinary party, Club Glam, a monthly party at the China Chalet restaurant hosted by DeSe Escobar. As well as the celebrities that you always pictured yourself being friends with, such as Abbi Jacobson, Rosario Dawson, Justin Theroux, Rainsford, Luka Sabbat, and Petra Collins. If there is one take away from Opening Ceremony’s Lunar New Year party, it is that the ever changing brand champions more than just beautiful clothing, it has a clear vision of the experience it wants its wearers to have.
