Tangina Stone Sees Beauty in Openness and Vulnerability

“Everything that I thought about the concept of beauty was what I was taught by others. What has changed big time is that now I decide for myself. I do not allow others to do it for me.”

Many would agree that there’s beauty in music. It is, after all, an art form that transcends mediums to invoke an array of feelings. In L’Officiel Singapore’s feature The Sound of Beauty, we speak to three up-and-coming artists about how beauty shapes music creation.

For Ohio native singer-songwriter, producer and composer Tangina Stone, music grants her the freedom of exploration. “There are no rules, just freedom of expression,” she says. “Music is my very first love. I cannot really think of a time in my life when it wasn't important to me.” Stone tells us that she first started writing songs as a toddler by changing the words of nursery songs to fit her own lyrical visions.

“I have always planned to pursue music as a career; it has always been a dream of mine and I think that a defining moment for me was when I moved away from my hometown at 18 to go to New York. Making this decision changed the entire course of my life and my career,” Stone explains. Now, the artist is eager to put out her new album Pisces this summer. “It has my entire heart and spirit wrapped up in the music and I can't wait to present it to the world.”

When asked about the intersection between music and beauty, Stone gets right down to it. “Beauty is subjective,” she says. “I think that artists defining what they think that that beauty is, for themselves on stage, definitely elevates the quality of the experience that an audience has during a live performance. What is more beautiful than openness and vulnerability?”

“I think that beauty can shape the way that an artist leads their creative process but it is not a universal rule. We all approach our art differently. For me, I like to write songs while thinking about beauty and catharsis. What makes me feel beautiful? What makes me feel free?”

Growing up, the artist’s relationship with beauty was akin to one that was more “narrow and rigid”. “Many things have changed over the years,” she explains. “Everything that I thought about the concept of beauty was what I was taught by others. What has changed big time is that now I decide for myself. I do not allow others to do it for me.”
