Marj Maroket is one of the guiding lights in making the morena movement actionable&mdash;educating, inspiring, and now elevating it through products that put Filipino beauty first with Happy Skin.

Filipino beauty is in the midst of a renaissance. Finally, it is more representative of the country&rsquo;s full range of features and skin tones. Because we are not a monolith, Filipino beauty is expanding to hold its full range&mdash;where morenas are finally given equal visibility and regard: in deeper shade ranges, in undertones that finally make sense. That space, between visibility and usability, is where content creator Marj Maroket built her voice.
On TikTok, her &ldquo;shade twin&rdquo; video&mdash;now among her most liked, with more than 83,000 engagements as of press time&mdash;turned the comment section into a kind of live shade-matching forum. Women compare undertones, debate finishes, and try to locate themselves in a beauty landscape that, for the longest time, asked them to adjust instead.
GRWM (get ready with me) videos have become the hallmark of her content&mdash;intimate, unhurried, yet still instructive, echoing the way she first learned beauty as a child. &ldquo;I feel like what helped grow my passion for beauty was watching my mom get ready in the morning for her corporate job,&rdquo; she shares. &ldquo;I think that's where it started. My pagiging kikay, also.&rdquo; What reads onscreen as routine carries that same sense of witnessing transformation&mdash;not as spectacle, but as something steady and self-possessed.&nbsp;

Around her, beauty as community was never distant: &ldquo;I have a lot of girl cousins, and growing up, we would all like get our hair done, go to the mall together&ndash;when mall culture was still a big thing&ndash;so I think I was surrounded by a lot of feminine presence from friends and family.&rdquo;
But it was really when she was in college that interest turned into a skill, tried and tested during rigorous cheer practice and game days as a cheerleader for&nbsp; De La Salle University. &ldquo;We had to do our own makeup for performances, and I think that's when I was kind of forced to learn how to do my own makeup,&rdquo; she looks back. The timing coincided with the golden age of beauty YouTube, where creators like Desi Perkins and Kathleen Lights became unlikely teachers. &ldquo;I would call it YouTube University, because that's where you would really learn at the time.&rdquo; The knowledge quickly became practical. &ldquo;Sooner or later, my teammates would come to me for makeup advice&hellip; So I was like, their go-to.&rdquo;
But Maroket&rsquo;s path into beauty was not immediate stardom. After graduating, she deliberately moved through the industry&rsquo;s less glamorous side. &ldquo;After graduating college, I just knew I wanted to work in beauty, whether it was sales or marketing or behind the scenes. I just wanted to be around beauty, even if it wasn't the fun stuff about it.&rdquo; At the now-defunct Calyxta, she worked across trade marketing and sales while occasionally assisting on editorial shoots. &ldquo;Because we were such a small team, I would help out during the magazine shoots&hellip; just being an assistant of the crew that day, so I think that sparked it even more.&rdquo; She enrolled in makeup school on weekends, building technical skills while holding down a full-time job. While she wanted to pursue a professional makeup artist career, maintaining a 9-to-5 made it challenging.

That corporate background still shapes the way she approaches content creation. &ldquo;I always say working in corporate helped me so much as a creator today. While people do think content creation or being an influencer is all fun, but you have deadlines to meet, you have briefs to read before you post.&rdquo; Even now, she runs her platform largely alone. &ldquo;I still do all of my content, I shoot, edit, conceptualize.&rdquo; The only concession is a management team handling negotiations. &ldquo;I don't like talking about money or negotiating or giving a price on my creativity.&rdquo;
Her pivot into content happened during the pandemic, when time&mdash;suddenly abundant&mdash;removed her last excuse. &ldquo;Working from home, I realized I had more time. So one day, I just woke up and said, like, Okay, I've been wanting to do YouTube for the longest time&hellip; I have time. No excuses, so I did.&rdquo;&nbsp;
The early response was modest. &ldquo;My first video platform was actually YouTube. But it didn't really take off. I had views in the few hundreds and it was mostly just friends and family.&rdquo;&nbsp;
TikTok changed that. &ldquo;When I started TikTok, I was one of the first few beauty creators from the Philippines who started posting there, and then the rest was history.&rdquo;
The platform&rsquo;s speed matched the way she already communicated. &ldquo;When I would post the video, I would get questions, and I could reply right away and make a short video. It's just more casual; a big production isn't needed.&rdquo; But it&rsquo;s not all spontaneity: &ldquo;I also don't write a script, but I do prepare an outline. The thing I think about the most is my hook. The first three to five seconds, to me, is the most crucial.&rdquo;
That careful balance of instinct and discipline has made her particularly trusted among both audiences and brands. She insists on testing products thoroughly before speaking about them. &ldquo;When I work with a brand, I always say, &lsquo;Give me a minimum of two weeks to try this,&rsquo; especially if it's skincare.&rdquo; And when she does critique, she does so in context. &ldquo;With beauty, what works for someone might not work for me&hellip; you can mention the cons for you, but it could be a pro for someone else.&rdquo;

That clarity is precisely what caught the attention of Happy Skin CEO and co-founder Jacqe Yuengtian-Gutierrez. Put on the brand&rsquo;s radar after her 2022 post turned the Lip Mallow Tint in Lowkey&mdash;a deceptively black tube&mdash;into a sold out hit, Maroket&rsquo;s collaboration did not begin with a pitch deck or a formal meeting, but with something more direct: she approached the founder at an event and spoke candidly about the possibility of building something together. The initiative stood out. For Yuengtian-Gutierrez, it signaled that Maroket did not see herself merely as a creator promoting products, but as a brand with ideas of her own&ndash;something Maroket unintentionally established by keeping beauty content and her personal life separate.
The partnership has since grown into one of the more thoughtful creator collaborations in the local industry. Instead of treating product development as a brief consultation, both parties invested unusual time in the process. Late last year, Maroket and Yuengtian-Gutierrez traveled to the factory themselves, sitting alongside brush makers for two working days&mdash;far longer than the few hours most developers allocate&mdash;to refine the shapes and construction of each tool. The approach reflects a shared philosophy: that Filipino beauty products can compete globally when the same level of care is applied to design and innovation.
That philosophy is also embedded in the economics of the brand. Happy Skin&rsquo;s products often sit at a slightly higher price point than many local competitors, something the company views not as a barrier but as a mechanism. The support of consumers willing to invest in those products allows the brand to channel more resources into research, materials, and development&mdash;an ecosystem meant to elevate F-beauty rather than simply keep pace with it.

Maroket&rsquo;s role within that system feels natural. As a creator known for objectively reviewing products across all price points&mdash;from drugstore staples to luxury imports&mdash;she occupies a rare position of credibility. The collaboration builds on the same logic that defines her content: specificity over spectacle.
With Happy Skin, she approached brushes, bronzers, and blushes not as trends but as corrections to what was missing in local routines. &ldquo;At that time, there was really no good local brush brand like we would all buy from,&rdquo; she says of her 2023 brush collection. Her designs respond to how makeup is actually applied. &ldquo;I use the same brush for different steps, so with the next collection, I made one specifically for this step.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Even materials were reconsidered. &ldquo;We used wood before, as sometimes we've gotten feedback that it would crack, so now I wanted to avoid that,&rdquo; she explains, which led to the shift toward more durable aluminum handles.
The bronzers address another misconception she frequently encounters about doing makeup as a morena. &ldquo;There's a misconception that if you're already morena, you don't need it, which I super disagree with,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;I think it enhances your skin tone even more.&rdquo; The formula reflects that goal&mdash;cream-based, blendable, designed to give time and control. &ldquo;You get a lot of blending time&hellip; and then once you're done, it sets, and it should last you a very long time.&rdquo;

With her baked blushes, she aimed for something equally intuitive. &ldquo;I personally like a formula that's buildable and not too super pigmented, so you can work with it.&rdquo; The finish is intentionally luminous. &ldquo;You really will glow, which I feel is, in my opinion, morena skin looks best when it's glowy. Not matte.&rdquo; The shades lean toward warmth and movement&mdash;&ldquo;to look like you've been under the sun or fresh from a workout.&rdquo;
Taken together, the collection reads less like a typical influencer collaboration and more like a system: tools and textures designed to make morena beauty not just visible, but workable.
That mission is personal for Maroket. &ldquo;Growing up, it wasn't something I used to be proud of,&rdquo; she says of her own morena skin. &ldquo;It made me think that I wasn't as beautiful.&rdquo; Today she occupies a different role. &ldquo;As one of the faces of morena beauty, I think it is a responsibility. It's an honor.&rdquo;
The recognition is part of a broader cultural shift. While generational icons like Nora Aunor, Angel Aquino, and Nadine Lustre made morena beauty visible, today&rsquo;s ccreators like Maroket are bridging the gap by making it legible.&nbsp;
Because being morena is already aspirational, but by breaking it down&mdash;shade by shade, step by step&mdash;until beauty stops feeling like something distant and starts becoming something that finally fits.
