Slim is in when it comes to home hygiene

When Dyson unveiled the Dyson PencilVac&trade;, many people, myself included, were genuinely surprised by how slim and compact the machine was. Even more impressive was the fact that its minimalist design didn&rsquo;t compromise on performance. While testing the PencilVac&trade;, I kept thinking that it would be great if all our cleaning tools could be this compact.
Apparently Dyson had the same idea. Fast forward to 2026 and the company has introduced the Dyson PencilWash&trade;, bringing the same ultra-slim concept to wet floor cleaning.
Officially unveiled on 19 February, the Dyson PencilWash&trade; is designed to offer a lighter and more compact solution for wet cleaning without compromising hygiene or effectiveness. It combines Dyson&rsquo;s expertise in floor cleaning technology with the brand&rsquo;s distinctive pencil-thin format, creating a machine that&rsquo;s easy to manoeuvre while still delivering solid cleaning performance for modern homes.

A Slimmer Approach to Wet Cleaning

One of the first things that stood out to me was the handle. Measuring just 38mm in diameter and weighing only 2.2kg, it&rsquo;s noticeably lighter than most wet cleaning tools. One of my biggest frustrations when mopping has always been the weight of the mop head once it becomes saturated with water. With the PencilWash&trade;, that physical strain is dramatically reduced. The slim handle is comfortable to grip and can lie flat to 170 degrees, making it easy to reach under low furniture or into tight spaces without losing cleaning power. The whole experience feels smooth and controlled, and even stubborn spots can usually be dealt with by simply passing over them a few more times.
Under the hood, the Dyson PencilWash&trade; is engineered to tackle multiple types of mess in a single pass, including wet spills and stains. It uses a high-density microfibre roller with 64,000 filaments per cm&sup2; that spins rapidly to lift both wet and dry debris at the same time. Dirty water and debris are continuously extracted from the roller with every rotation, ensuring that the machine isn&rsquo;t simply pushing grime around the floor. Instead, a combination of hydration, agitation and extraction technologies ensures the roller is always cleaning with fresh water. An eight-point hydration system delivers a consistent supply of clean water directly to the roller, helping maintain effective and hygienic cleaning throughout.

Everyday Cleaning Made Easier

In everyday use, I see the Dyson PencilWash&trade; as something of a &ldquo;super mop&rdquo;. Its lightweight design makes it particularly useful for quick clean-ups and daily maintenance. After a quick sweep or vacuum, I simply fill the water tank located in the head and attach the slim handle before starting the wet cleaning process. It works especially well on kitchen tiles and common flooring surfaces, leaving floors feeling genuinely clean with no sticky residue. Much of that credit goes to the high-density microfibre roller, which does most of the heavy lifting.
Where the machine really shines is in its manoeuvrability. Because it&rsquo;s far slimmer than many other floor cleaners, it&rsquo;s much easier to reach tight spaces and move around furniture. The cleaning motion feels smooth and effortless, which makes the whole process far less of a chore than traditional mopping.
Once cleaning is done, the dirty water container can be unclipped and emptied easily. However, it&rsquo;s worth noting that unlike some other Dyson wet cleaning machines, the PencilWash&trade; doesn&rsquo;t include a self-cleaning function. This means you&rsquo;ll need to rinse the microfibre roller manually and leave it out to dry afterwards to avoid any unwanted odours.

Things to Consider &amp; Thoughts

There are also a couple of small practical details to keep in mind. When removing the head, it&rsquo;s best to keep it level with the ground as it can leak or spill if handled too roughly. The clean water tank holds 300ml, which feels just right for a small three-bedroom apartment. If you live in a larger home, you may need to refill the tank midway through cleaning. Water flow can be adjusted between two hydration modes depending on your flooring and cleaning needs, although using the higher hydration setting will naturally run through the water more quickly.
Overall, I&rsquo;m a big fan of the Dyson PencilWash&trade;. It&rsquo;s lightweight, easy to use and surprisingly effective for everyday floor cleaning. I especially appreciate how little effort it takes to achieve that freshly cleaned floor feeling. Used alongside a vacuum cleaner, it&rsquo;s a great way to maintain clean floors without breaking a sweat. Its compact size also makes it easy to store, which is ideal for smaller homes. For my HDB apartment, it feels perfectly suited, and it&rsquo;s exciting to see Dyson continuing to expand its Pencil series with such thoughtfully designed tools.
