Michael Rider Becomes New Creative Director of Celine After Hedi Slimane's Exit
Coming from Polo Ralph Lauren, he has already worked in the past for Celine under the creative guidance of Phoebe Philo.
Michael Rider has been named Celine's new creative director just hours after the announcement of Hedi Slimane's departure. This comes as no surprise to many, as Rider was rumored to take Slimane's place back in May.
Rider is a fashion designer known for his work with several high-profile fashion houses. Before being appointed as the new creative director of Celine, Rider had an extensive career in luxury fashion. He served as the ready-to-wear design director at Celine under the leadership of Phoebe Philo, the celebrated designer behind "Old CÉLINE." Rider is known for his refined, minimalist approach to fashion, a style that aligns with Philo's legacy at the brand.
After his time at Celine, Rider moved on to join Ralph Lauren in 2018, contributing to the American brand's design direction. Earlier in his career, he worked as a senior designer at Balenciaga from 2004 to 2008, a time when the brand was solidifying its position as a leader in avant-garde fashion.
Rider is also a graduate of Brown University, and he is known for his ability to merge intellectual design with commercial appeal. His diverse experiences at these major fashion houses have shaped him into a designer with both creative vision and a strong understanding of the luxury market.
Rider's anticipated return to Celine marks a homecoming of sorts—and marks a new era for the brand. A homecoming in short, as Celine CEO Séverine Merle said: "I am delighted to welcome Michael back to Celine, a maison that he knows intimately. Michael’s vision, creative talent, together with his genuine nature and strong connection to Celine’s heritage make him a natural choice to continue to build a long-lasting success for the maison"
"Celine is a maison with values very close to my heart and a beautiful heritage to build on," said the new creative director of the French fashion house after his appointment.
