It begins with the title: The Skirt. An entire collection built around a single garment. There is no theme, historical era or external reference to guide the narrative. Instead, there is simply the skirt, one of the most codified pieces in the Western wardrobe, becoming the collection's sole subject of investigation.
The decision feels almost ascetic in its focus, and that is precisely what makes it so radical. In their hands, the skirt is not simply a garment. It becomes a system. Its graphic, linear and distinctly modernist silhouette provides a framework for endless variations, with fixed structures and changing details constantly shifting the way we read it. The approach is almost structuralist: the form remains recognisable while its meaning continues to change.
That tension between function and decoration runs throughout the collection. Velcro, normally associated with practical fastening, becomes a decorative surface. Beneath the crystal embroidery, however, it retains its mechanical purpose, allowing the skirt to be revealed or concealed through the wearer's movement. Function is never abandoned for the sake of beauty. Instead, the two exist together, each making the other more interesting.
The same idea appears in the snap fasteners, which are elevated into jewellery while retaining their original function, and in the crinoline, which shifts between decorative layer and protective shell. Familiar materials and components are repeatedly given new roles without losing their original identities.

The Spring/Summer 2027 women's collection also explores a series of deliberate material contradictions. Industrial fabrics such as matte ciré and Re-Nylon are folded into pleats, despite their technical associations, while cotton is treated to resemble leather or suede. Elsewhere, crystal recreates the delicacy of guipure lace, while almost faded floral prints appear on synthetic surfaces.
The result is a constant conversation between craftsmanship and industry, softness and technology, decoration and utility. It is a tension that has become central to the creative language of Prada and Simons.
Perhaps the collection's most memorable gesture is the pleated skirt that extends beyond the body and is held in the hand, turning the garment into a deliberate extension of movement. The fabric is no longer simply something that surrounds the body. It becomes part of the gesture itself.
This is also where the collection's central idea becomes clearest. Prada and Simons play with juxtaposition, showing how the same skirt can take on an entirely different identity when worn with a sweater, a shirt or a bra top. Nothing exists entirely on its own. Meaning comes from context, from what sits beside it and from the way it is worn.

The front row reflected that same idea of shifting identities. The gathering brought together different generations and worlds, from cinema and music to art and fashion, without any single affiliation being enough to define them.
It felt like an almost perfect echo of the collection itself. Identity, like the skirt, is constructed through contrast and proximity. It does not exist in isolation.
At a time when fashion is often driven by constant novelty and rapid change, Prada's decision to focus so intensely on a single garment feels particularly deliberate. The collection asks what happens when attention is concentrated rather than scattered, when one familiar object is examined from every possible angle.
Perhaps that is where the real luxury lies. Not in excess, but in having the time and discipline to look closely at one thing. For Prada and Simons, the skirt becomes a way of doing exactly that.
