People’s Choice Awards 2021: Tom Hiddleston, Kim Kardashian Among Big Winners of the Night
And the people have spoken. Here are all the highlights of the 2021 People’s Choice Awards.
Hosted by Saturday Night Live’s Kenan Thompson, this year’s People’s Choice Awards were as entertaining as ever – showcasing the best of film, television, music, and pop culture with a star-studded audience in attendance and performances by stars like Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, and H.E.R. spread across the night.
The event saw big highlights like Kim Kardashian winning the People’s Fashion Icon award, Halle Berry – the People’s Icon award, Aguilera – the inaugural Music Icon Award, and The Rock taking home the People’s Champion award. On top of that, Marvel also swept awards across most categories for ‘Loki’, ‘Black Widow’, and ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’, with actors Tom Hiddleston, Scarlett Johansson, and Simu Liu accepting the awards on their behalf and in their separate categories.
Without further ado, here’s a breakdown of all the highlights at the PCA’s this year.
Kim Kardashian wins Fashion Icon Award
Dressed head-to-toe in a black form-fitting number and accessorised with a pair of statement sunglasses and fabulously loud earrings, Kim Kardashian humbly accepted her title as the People’s Fashion Icon of 2021. In her speech, she thanked her ex, Kanye, for introducing her to the fashion world and helping her work with more designers she otherwise would not have been able to do so before.
“I started off as a closet organizer and a stylist, so the fact that I am winning a Fashion Icon Award, it's like a pinch-me moment,” says the Kardashian. “I fell in love with fashion and I'm so inspired by so many people. But again, this is like a dream that I get to wake up and wear these amazing clothes and just try new things. You know, take a risk. I’m so humbled.”
Tom Hiddleston accepts awards for Male TV Star of 2021 and Show of the Year
No surprise there, Tom Hiddleston is the people’s Male TV Star of 2021. Also winning in the category for Show of the Year, it is clear that the ‘Loki’ series has won the hearts of the mass public. When accepting his award for Male TV Star of 2021, the actor thanked his cast members – Sophia Di Martino, Owen Wilson, Jonathan Majors, and more for the honour of working alongside them. “I share this entirely with the whole cast and crew,” says Hiddleston.
He ended off his speech by showing his appreciation for his fans: “I want to thank you, the people, the audience. The only reason I am allowed to play this character and continue to play him is because of the affection in which is held by you,” Hiddleston continues. “In our story, Loki found his glorious purpose devoid of meaning and this means a great deal to me.”
Simu Liu wins awards for Action Movie Star of 2021 and Action Movie of the Year
Breakout star and ‘Kim’s Convenience’ alum Simu Liu accepted two awards at the People’s Choice Awards this year. One for ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ as Action Movie of the Year, and one for himself as Action Movie Star of 2021. Like Hiddleston, the actor thanked his fans for the award: “Thank you to all of you guys. You’re the reason why I’m here and not just here accepting this award, but here living my dream every single day.”
Liu also took his moment to shine some praise on other members of the Shang-Chi team. “I had very little to do with the success of this movie,” says the actor. “I feel like I get a disproportionate amount of credit for it, but that credit should rightfully go to our amazing director, Destin Daniel Cretton, to Kevin Feige, Victoria Alonso, Louis D'Esposito over at Marvel Studios, and to the hundreds of cast and crew who worked so tirelessly to make this movie what it is.”
Scarlett Johansson accepts People’s Female Movie Star of 2021 and Movie of 2021 for ‘Black Widow’
Accepting her last award for Marvel is Scarlett Johansson, known for her portrayal of original Avenger – Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff over the past 10 years. In her speech, the actress gushed: “This is very exciting because it’s the People’s Choice Awards and that’s who we make movies for.”
“Ten-plus years ago when I first started my journey with Marvel, I didn’t know whether or not audiences would like my portrayal of this beloved character and so I really owe this all to you guys,” she says.
Johansson also went on to thank the women on the team: “I also have to mention the badass women that I worked with on this film – our filmmaker Cate Shortland, our leader, my amazing co-stars Florence Pugh and Rachel Weisz, our producer Victoria Alonso, thank you guys so much.”
The Rock wins People’s Champion Award, Male Movie Star and Comedy Movie Star of 2021
Last but not least, The Rock took home awards – Male Movie Star and Comedy Movie Star of 2021 for the fun adventure movie ‘Jungle Cruise’ at the PCA’s. “We wanted to make a movie that honoured that ride around the world,” says Johnson, “and certainly, the most important thing was to entertain you guys around the world so thank you so much.”
He went on to thank his co-star Emily Blunt for being his partner in comedy during the film. “With comedy, it always takes a great partner and this one goes out to this woman who’s one of the greatest actresses of our generation, of our time, she is brilliant, she is funny, she is almost as filthy as me, especially when she drinks tequila. Emily Blunt, this is for you.”
