Almost 20 years after the release of the first movie, we've got some good news. Our favorite girlboss is planning for a comeback to the big screen with a third movie!

The release date
We officially know when the third film hits theaters. During a virtual Legally Blonde cast reunion with Witherspoon, Jennifer Coolidge (Paulette Bonafonté), Selma Blair (Vivian Kensington), Jessica Cauffiel (Margot), Matthew Davis (Warner Huntington III), Ali Larter (Brooke Taylor Windham), Holland Taylor (Professor Stromwell), Alanna Ubach (Serena McGuire), and Luke Wilson (Emmett Richmond), a release date has been confirmed. Legally Blonde 3 will be released in May 2022 . Take note!
Witherspoon first confirmed the third film in June 2018.
Witherspoon turned to her Instagram fan base to announce the big news that Legally Blonde 3 will be official. She posted a short video of herself in Elle's sequin hot pink bikini sunbathing on an air mattress. "It's True ... # LegallyBlonde3," she wrote under the post.
Mindy Kaling Is writing the script
Deadline reported that Kaling will be working with Brooklyn Nine-Nine creator Dan Goor to write the script for Legally Blonde 3. The pair last collaborated on a Kaling / Priyanka Chopra wedding comedy, which is in the works at Universal. Witherspoon also co- starred Kaling in Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time in 2018.
In a recent interview with ELLE.com, Kaling opened her book about the "really challenging" task of bringing Elle Woods into the 2020s. “ Elle Woods is such an iconic character and is so loved, ” explained Kaling . "Normally I don't like working on a character the most, because the expectations around the character have already been formed. But because we haven't seen Elle for 18 years, I was enthusiastic. We know what Elle was like when she was born. She was 21 to 22 years old. But what if she'll be 42? That character, so innocent and girlish, what is she like when she's dealing with adult problems and being a grown woman? She's not a little girl anymore. "
While the plot is being covered up, Kaling teases about her collaboration with Goor , " We loved working on it."
The third film will be laced with “great feminist views”.
During an interview for The Hollywood Reporter, Witherspoon was asked to fill in this sentence blank: "Legally Blonde 3 will be ...". She replied, "So much fun. Full of fashion. Full of great feminist ideas. It will be global. It will have animals in it. It will have old cast members in it. We just have to film it. But that's my hope. and dream for Legally Blonde 3. " And as for Elle's bestie Paulette, our hopes were confirmed: "It will be Jennifer Coolidge's comeback."
