When Taylor Jenkins Reid released her book 'Daisy Jones & The Six' three years ago, there was no question that it would make for great television. A full year before the novel was published, Amazon Studios and Hello Sunshine (Reese Witherspoon's production company) bought the rights to the work with plans to create a limited series.
The bestselling novel follows the trajectory of a fictional '70s rock band as its members navigate fame, drugs, sexism, affairs, and loss throughout their careers. While loosely based on the lives of Fleetwood Mac band members, the book has been praised for its creativity and realistic portrayal of the rock 'n' roll era. The unique writing style of the book, told through transcripts of a music documentary set in the future, sets itself up perfectly for the television format.
The show, which was supposed to begin filming in the spring of 2020, was postponed for more than a year due to the pandemic. In September 2021, the cast shared that they had begun shooting, and just one week ago, they confirmed that filming had wrapped in LA. The 'Daisy Jones' cast is now heading to New Orleans to shoot the remainder of the series, which is expected to release at the end of this year. Plot
Closely tied to the book's plot, the 12-episode limited series will tell the story of Daisy Jones, an up-and-coming LA artist, as she joins legendary band The Six to create the biggest album of the 1970s. We will see as Jones and Billy Dunne, frontman of The Six, form a complicated relationship with fame, drugs, and each other. Band members Graham, Eddie, Karen, and Warren also share what happened during their time in the spotlight when the cameras weren't on. Just like the novel, the show will be told in a documentary style with first-person accounts of what happened from the band's inception to its untimely end. The series will include lyrics from the book, and while there are a few changes, the writers are working closely with Reid to ensure they stay true to the book's themes.
Cast
Fans were excited to learn that Riley Keough, granddaughter of the legendary singer Elvis Presley and stepdaughter to Michael Jackson, was cast to play none other than Daisy Jones herself. The star-studded cast continues with Sam Claflin ('The Hunger Games', 'Me Before You') as rock legend and The Six frontman Billy Dunne and Camila Morrone as Billy's faithful wife, Camila Dunne.
Suki Waterhouse, a musician in real life, plays keyboardist and rebel Karen Sirko (also known as "Karen Karen"), while Will Harrison plays lead guitarist and brother to Billy, Graham Dunne. 'Narcos' and 'Pose' star Sebastian Chacon plays Warren Rhodes, the most level-headed member of the band.
Nabiyah Be ('Black Panther') takes on the role of Simone Jackson, a famous singer and Daisy's best friend. English singer Josh Whitehouse plays Eddie Roundtree, the black sheep of the band who often butts heads in creative decisions with Billy. Seasoned actor Tom Wright will play top producer Teddy, and Timothy Olyphant ('Santa Clarita Diet', 'Fargo') will play recurring character Rod, a manager of The Six.
Production
Not only does 'Daisy Jones & The Six' have a star-studded cast, but the team behind the camera is just as seasoned. The series is co-produced by Reese Witherspoon's production company, Hello Sunshine, who brought us critically acclaimed shows like 'Little Fires Everywhere', 'Big Little Lies', and 'The Morning Show'. Amazon Studios, producers 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel', 'The Boys', and the upcoming Harry Styles film 'My Policeman', is another co-producer; 'Daisy Jones' is set to debut on their streaming platform Prime Video later this year.
Head writers for the show include Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber, who were the team behind works like '500 Days of Summer' and 'The Disaster Artist', and 'Mulan' (2022) director Niki Caro is credited as an executive producer and director of the show.
Singer-songwriter Blake Mills, who has previously worked with John Legend and Ed Sheeran, has been tasked with bringing the fictional band and their best-selling album Aurora to life and creating original music for the show. Record producer and "industry guru" Tony Berg, a closer collaborator with Phoebe Bridgers, is also involved in the music behind this rock 'n' roll centric show. "Sonic soulmates" Malcolm McRae and Kane Ritchotte are the vocal coaches for the show and even make a cameo as a rival band in one of the episodes. All original music is set to be distributed by Amazon Music.
Makeup, Hair, and Fashion
Fans will be happy to know that this period piece is in good hands. Head hairstylist Gina Marie DeAngelis, who worked in the hair department for 'You' and 'Westworld', is in charge of all things '70s hair. Rebecca Wachtel serves as head of makeup, and her previous work on 'Truth Be Told', 'Pretty Little Liars', and plastic surgery series 'Nip/Tuck' show she's up for the challenge. Considering the show will alternate from the younger band members' experiences to their documentary-style interviews several decades later, it seems appropriate that Michele Tyminski Schoenbach, a makeup artist on 'This Is Us', is joining Wachtel in the makeup department. As for stylists, not much is known yet; however, if the behind-the-scenes pictures are any indication, the stylists have certainly accomplished the free-flowing aesthetic of the 1970s with colourful bell bottoms, loose blouses, and those very controversial perms and side-burns.
