Exclusive: Sonmi on the Philosophy Behind meeth’s Gentle Approach to Skincare
The model and celebrity shares her personal approach to skincare and how the brand incorporates Japanese innovations into its formulas.
Inspired by her “burgeoning passion for helping others discover the miracles of their own skin,” Sonmi decided it was about time she created a skincare brand of her own that focuses on the gentle approach to skincare. How would you describe your approach to skincare?
I treat the complexion like a precious jewel. That means no harsh or aggressive formulas, unlike what’s found in most products today. I adhere to a gentle approach that is easy on the skin, giving a greater focus to what’s nutritious – what truly makes the skin happy.
What motivated you to create meeth?
I am a firm believer in the entwinement of inner and outer beauty, and in every endeavour strive to nurture both flames. A force to be reckoned with, I am driven by an unquenchable passion for helping people fall in love with their skin and discover true self-confidence.

I am well aware of the harmful effects of blue light exposure on the skin. This is especially crucial as most of us spend hours a day in front of our computer screens, and do not realise the damage this might be doing to our skin. With that in mind, I am committed to searching for new abilities in biotechnology to combat the hazard of blue light.
At meeth, we carefully integrated a new anti-ageing and blue-light protecting ingredient, derived primarily from Deinococcus ferment extract, into our multi-function sunscreen, the F Bright UV Base. A makeup base packed with antioxidants, its SPF 44 PA+++ protection and light foundation ensure your skin is fully protected from UVA and UVB rays and blue-light at all times.

What do you think is lacking in the skincare industry today?
Your beautiful skin is the most delicate and visible organ of your entire body; it absorbs nourishing ingredients like a soft and velvety sponge. I noticed that there is a lack of attention on body care in the beauty industry. As meeth’s philosophy is centred around overall wellness, I decided to add body care and hair care under meeth’s beauty umbrella. I started with the Silky Body Scrub, launched on 15th October in Singapore.
When is the right time to start investing in a skincare routine?
Skincare starts at a certain age by a particular trigger. It almost certainly never does at any age under 25 which is a shame since it should actually start to take place during our early 20s. Things like dry skin, a spot or the appearance of a wrinkle are good enough triggers.
Men are not much different from women when it comes to drivers. What tends to happen is that men start later and are much more simplistic about the care of the skin. In summary, we all want the same things, look good and feel better about ourselves the better we look and this is basically what defines the intensity of a particular type of care or specific routine.
