It seems Gentle Monster is on quite the roll this year. Following sell-out collaborations with Blackpink’s Jennie Kim and Kris Wu, the South Korean label is set to launch another music-fuelled tie-up at the beginning of September, having tapped Thomas Wesley Pentz (better known as Diplo) for its latest eyewear outing.
Dubbed SPACE COWBOY, the capsule is inspired by the Grammy award-winning artist, producer and DJ’s indefatigable spirit and singular sense of style. Aiming to bridge the gap between classic and modern design elements, it focuses on two striking frames: the aviator-esque LONE WOLF and rounded, retro-fabulous THE CUB.
Both are crafted from lightweight gold- and silver-tone titanium, and feature soft groove details as well as detachable clip-on lenses in four colourways hand-picked expressly by Diplo: gradient orange or green for LONE WOLF and gradient red or blue-green for THE CUB. Interestingly, the frames incorporate adjustable dials that allow for the innovative customisation of temple lengths.
Priced at SGD495, each pair of sunglasses slash opticals is packaged in a special eyewear case that includes a handwritten note and signature from Diplo — it’s already been sported by local music talents Narelle Kheng, Tabitha Nauser and Sandra Riley Tang.
“I was stoked to collaborate with Gentle Monster and work creatively in a different way,” says Diplo. “I’m grateful they were down to push the envelope with me, and I love what we created.”
To accompany the new collection, the Seoul-based brand also premieres a 3D digital campaign that projects the multi-threat on an intergalactic quest (equipped with Gentle Monster sunglasses) to save the earth and humanity from an unidentified light source throwing our world into chaos.
