It’s official: a Madonna biopic is on the way. A few weeks after teasing a mystery project she’s been working on with Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody on social media (“When you’re stuck in a house with multiple injuries what do you do?” she wrote in a caption, followed by several music-related emojis), the Queen of Pop took to Instagram Live recently to share more details about the upcoming movie based on her life.
“The focus is really about my struggle as an artist,” Madonna declared. “And really just the journey, which has been happy, sad, mad, crazy, good, bad, and ugly.”
The 62-year-old singer revealed that the screenplay covers pivotal moments in her life such as her come-up in the avant-garde scene of early ’80s New York (with mentions of Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat); writing the chart-topping hit ‘Like A Prayer’ with Patrick Leonard; meeting Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza and Luis Xtravaganza, the ballroom dancers who played an important role in the voguing craze; and her “devastating experience” with Pepsi.
The film will also touch on her time on the set of Evita, where Madonna confessed to being “totally and utterly intimidated by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice and the story of Eva Perón… and living up to all the great singers and actresses who had played her before me”, and admitted that Webber was “not nice” to her.
Furthermore, it appears the as-yet-unnamed project will involve Little Women producer Amy Pascal, and, given that the script is currently 107 pages long, could stretch to about two hours long. As to who will portray the pop superstar in the movie, it won’t be Madame X herself, sadly. But there are speculations that Ozark actress Julia Garner is in the running, as several sharp-eyed fans noticed that Madonna and her manager Guy Oseary just started following Garner on Instagram.
We’ll have to wait and see how the biopic will turn out, but for now, you can watch the Instagram Live session for yourself below.
