The rumour mill that has been in overdrive since news of Hedi Slimane leaving Yves Saint Laurent broke has finally come to a standstill.

So, what can we expect after the rock chic that Slimane brought to the French label? According to YSL’s CEO Francesca Bellettini, Anthony Vaccarello’s “modern, pure aesthetic is the perfect fit” as he “impeccably balances elements of provocative femininity and sharp masculinity in his silhouettes”.

Sexy and confident though his designs may be, the 36-year-old Belgian designer (who comes from an Italian family) is known to be painfully shy — aren’t the best ones usually so? His pieces, which incorporate a monochromatic palette and sensuous plunging necklines, have garnered him major fashion prizes, including the top prize at the Hyeres festival.

The questions on our minds: Will Vaccarello who took over the reins yesterday inject the sexy legginess of his previous creations into his new offerings? Will he garner the same kind of A-list following (the likes of Lady Gaga, Jared Leto and Justin Bieber) that Slimane drew? We can’t wait to see what Vaccarello brings to the (sewing) table. Exciting times ahead!
