Alessandro Michele is the undeniable fashion breakout star of the year. Virtually unknown to most before taking over the reins at Gucci after Frida Giannini’s abrupt departure, Michele stunned all with this desire to transform the storied Italian house. Gone were Gucci’s old brand of sexy and in came a look that so many around the world have tried to replicate (us included, we admit). He redefined menswear and masculinity, and he introduced a new perspective on sensuality and androgyny. Then there’s the slew of accessories that are now must-haves among fashion’s street style set (yes, we’re thinking about the sold-out-everywhere Gucci Horsebit fur slippers). And he did all that in less than a year. Less than a year, people.

With all that, it’s no surprise that Michele was honoured with the International Fashion Designer of the Year award by the British Fashion Council. Natalie Massenet MBE, chairman of the Council, says, “Alessandro Michele is a phenomenon at Gucci. His exciting eclectic aesthetic has made an overnight impact on global fashion trends. It is not just that he has made the brand covetable and the product so desirable. He has also reinvigorated the retail experience bringing back playfulness and magic to the flagship store. This is a man who has his customer in his heart and celebrates them.”

Here’s to many, many more phenomenal collections!
